Apple //e to PC File Transfer I finally had a go at transferring some of my old Apple //e disks over to the PC. After a couple days of Google searches and many failed attempts, I finally have it nailed. Its pretty easy once you get the right programs and have everything setup correctly. For those interested, here's how I got it to work: * For the physical connection, I used a straight 9pin serial cable, male on one end, female on the other. * Female end plugs into the PC. * Male end plugs into a null modem adaptor. (Radio Shack has them) * From the null modem adaptor, I used a 9pin to 25pin serial cable from an external modem. The 9pin end connects to the null modem adaptor and the 25pin end connects to the Super Serial Card. * Set the Super Serial Card's jumpers to 19,200 baud. (SW1, switches one through four set to 'OFF') * Set the Super Serial Card's 'TERMINAL' / 'MODEM' jumper block to 'MODEM'. * Download Apple Disk Transfer. * Follow the directions for getting ADT over to the Apple. In a nutshell, you're going to ASCII upload it with Hyperterm directly to the Apple, with the Apple taking input from the serial port. In Hyperterm, you're going to need to set some delays on the transfer. I used 500ms for carraige returns and 100ms per character. * Run ADT on the Apple and on the PC and start transferring! * Once a disk is transferred to the PC, you'll have to add the '.DSK' file extension to it in Windows. * If you're transferring over documents such as Appleworks files, you can open them on the PC with a program called Fishwings. With this you can copy/paste into a Word document. Note for 64bit users! I switched to an AMD 64bit machine with Windows XP 64. Of course, ADT doesn't run; however, you can use DosBox to get around this. You'll need to edit dosbox.conf and setup the serial port. Mine is as follows: serial1=directserial realport:com1 startbps:19200 bytesize:7 Note that I had to change from bytesize 8 down to 7. Not sure why, but 8 wouldn't work at all. |
